Ask any union member why they joined the union there in or any union for that matter. They would probably tell you to have a way to have representation when they have to stand up to the bullies theyall boss. It seems as though in a lot of places there is no happy medium. Most people need the union’s support to help settle disputes between the workers and their bosses. So, why is all of this important?
In the past few years there are has been a new proposal, that many people probably aren’t aware of, that is designed to make unions stronger and easier to form. This proposal is called the Employee Free Chioce Act. If put into place this act would make card checking the new way to recognizie unions. No longer would there be a need for the ancient vote to have to be taken. All workers would have to is sign a card to for a union. There have been many things that say workers fear putting their jobs in jeopardy by trying to form a union. In Many workplaces people have been fired for even talking about possibly forming a union. Bosses and others in charge don’t want workers to have a union toprotect them, and give them higher wages. They would rather leave them vonerable so they can pick them off whenever with no reasoning.
So, what exactly is this Employee Free Choice Act, and what will it do? Basically this act would guarantee recognition of a union when the majority of workers sign union cards, this is where the term card checking comes from. It helps workers form contracts, and it would even have stronger punishments for unfair labor practices, so it would certainly keep mean, bully bosses on there toes.
Many don’t understand what the big deal is and why unions are so important, and great. Unions provide many positive things that workers feel they need for example: They provide the representation that so many workers feel they need. Plus when someone is a union member they receive higher wages, better healthcare and pension plans, and better and safer working conditions there are also lower poverty levels when there are unions.
So, would the Employee Free Choice Act have a positive effect on things? I believe so i guess it depends on how others feel as well.
